Slow Cooker Pork and Sweet Potato Stew for Warm Comfort Food
I love when autumn rolls around, and I can cook my stew recipes. This slow cooker pork and sweet potato stew is one that I developed over time.
This recipe has yellow potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas, and carrots as the vegetables. The seasoning can be adjusted depending on how much heat you may or may not want. It is a hearty stew.
I use the No Salt Tony Chachere’s primarily because I like to see how much salt goes into my cooking. You could use the traditional Tony Chachere’s, but you would need to leave the additional salt out.
Also, if you want to do your seasoning without Tony’s, that is possible too. This recipe is easy to adapt to what you and your family will like.
First Steps of the Slow Cooker Pork and Sweet Potato Stew
This pork stew recipe can be done on the stovetop, but I prefer the slow cooker. The Crock-Pot works perfectly for me, even if I forget to thaw my pork stew meat ahead of time. For this recipe, I placed the frozen pork stew meat in the slow cooker, added the broth and seasoning, and let it cook for about 2 hours. After two hours, I peel and cut up the potatoes and put them in.
When cutting up the potatoes, I cut them into about 1-inch cubes. This allows them to get done in the time remaining on the stew. If I leave them in large chunks, I have found that they sometimes do not get done in time. I end up with it being time to eat, and my potatoes are still hard.
Next Steps for Your Pork Stew
Now that you have the meat and potatoes started cooking, it is time to add the peas and carrots. I use frozen peas and carrots from the grocery store. You can use fresh, frozen, or canned. Frozen works well with this recipe. You need to add these veggies after about an hour or two of the cooked potatoes and meat.
Frozen peas and carrots do not take the full time to cook. Fresh ones, though, would take longer.
Thickening the Pork and Sweet Potato Stew
Once all the ingredients are done, you will need to see if it needs to be thickened. It is unnecessary to thicken the juice, but my family prefers it to be thicker rather than runny.
You will need to get a measuring cup and scoop some juice from your stew. With about half a cup of broth from your stew, you will mix in cornstarch. Cornstarch is a great way to thicken any sauce, broth, or juice.
Regarding how much cornstarch to use, I usually start with a tablespoon of it. I mix it well. I have a little hand mixer to put into my measuring cup, which will beat all the lumps. The little hand mixer works wonders. It works out any lumps. If you are hand-mixing the cornstarch and stew broth, you must be diligent to avoid clumping. No one likes to bite into a mouth full of powdery cornstarch that did not get mixed in well.
Once your juice and cornstarch are well blended, you will pour the mixture gradually into your stew. Stir the mixture vigorously as you add the cornstarch blend. If you stir well, the cornstarch mix will not clump up as you add it.
The cornstarch mix will take a minute or two to thicken, but by then, you will be able to see if it is the consistency you want. If you want more thickness, you would repeat the process of pulling juice out and mixing cornstarch in until you get your stew the desired thickness.
Pork and Sweet Potato Stew Recipe for the Slow Cooker

Ingredients
- 1 ½ pounds pork stew meat
- 1 ½ pounds sweet potatoes peeled and cubed
- 1 ½ pounds yellow potatoes peeled and cubed
- 1 ½ cups frozen peas and carrots
- 16 ounces of chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon No Salt Tony Chachere’s
- 3 teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons paprika
- 3 teaspoons minced garlic
- ½ onion chopped
Instructions
- Place pork into slow cooker. Add seasoning, onions, and garlic.
- Peel and cut up potatoes. Add the cut potatoes to the slow cooker.
- Set the slow cooker on high for 6-7 hours. About halfway through cooking add the peas and carrots to the slow cooker.
- Check to make sure that the potatoes and pork are done. Add cornstarch if needed to thicken the liquid.
