I am a huge peanut butter and chocolate fan. My aunt gave me some of this puppy chow when I was a teenager. At the time, Muddy Buddies were unavailable in the grocery stores, at least in my area. So, I was happy to learn how to make them. My favorite candy is Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. That I loved this from the first bite was inevitable.
I figured that the muddy buddies recipe would be complicated. I had never made candy, and this seemed like it would be like that. My aunt assured me that it was an easy recipe. She gave me a copy of her recipe card, and I stored it in my recipe box, not making it right away.
Christmas came around, and I wanted something to fill some Mason Jars with that I had decorated to give to some co-workers. The puppy chow seemed just the thing.
I decided to give my aunt’s recipe a try. I was surprised at how easy it was. The fact that the recipe didn’t even call for the oven or stovetop was a huge plus, in my opinion. Also, it was a great recipe because I had all the ingredients except the Chex cereal. I quickly placed an order for the Chex cereal and was ready to try the recipe out for the first time.
I tried combining it all in a large Ziploc bag the first time I made it. This worked but was a mess. The next time I made the recipe, I found a large bowl that had a lid that fits. This bowl method was super nice because I could shake the cereal and toss it well to get the cereal coated well.

Equipment
- Large mixing bowl with lid – I have the stacking mixing bowls from Pioneer Woman that worked wonderfully for this recipe. Any large mixing bowl will work if you have a lid that will fit well so that sugar doesn’t fly everywhere.
- Microwave-safe bowl – I used my 4-cup Pyrex measuring cup. Again, if your dish is microwaveable, you could use anything large enough to stir the ingredients.
Notes About the Ingredients
- Chex cereal – The Rice Chex works well with the flavor combinations of the puppy Chex. The gridded puff shape of the Chex works amazingly well since it allows the peanut butter and chocolate to go into them. This gives you more flavor per bite than if it was coated and not filled with the mix. I am sure you could use other types of Chex cereal or even an off-brand cereal structured like the Chex.
- Chocolate chips – The recipe calls for semi-sweet chocolate chips. I have yet to try another type of chip. I want to make a batch using white chocolate chips sometime soon. Since Reeses has the white chocolate version of their cups, I imagine this recipe would work well with them.
- Peanut butter – My peanut butter choice is Peter Pan Creamy Peanut Butter. I have in the past used the store brand of creamy peanut butter. I have never used the chunky one. I am unsure how that would mix, but this recipe is adaptable to many variations. One variation I think would be good is a different nut butter or Nutella. With so many people with peanut allergies now, you could switch to almond butter, cashew butter, etc. The sky is the limit on choices to make this uniquely yours.
- Butter – Salted butter is what I usually use. I have, though, in the past used stick margarine. The decision is yours, but my vote is real butter, though probably not the healthiest.
Copycat Muddy Buddies, AKA Puppy Chow
Ingredients
- 9 cups Rice Chex cereal
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 2 tbsp butter
- ½ cup peanut butter
- 2 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Measure out the nine cups of Chex cereal and put it in a large bowl with a lid. Set aside.
- Put the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter in a microwavable safe dish. Melt in the microwave for 1 minute. Stir. Continue to microwave until the mixture is thoroughly mixed.
- Pour the peanut butter mixture over the cereal. Stir gently to coat the cereal.
- Pour powdered sugar into the large bowl. Place the lid on the bowl and shake till all cereal is coated with powdered sugar.
- Let it cool, and then enjoy!
